Matthew 9:37-38

Verses

“Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

‭‭‬ ‭Prayer:

Lord Jesus, today we pray to thank you for the blessings of your endless harvest, the fruits of which are enriched with our purpose. Lord please continue teaching us not only how to harvest your blessings, but guide us in bringing others alongside us to open their hearts and minds to you, so they too can experience the abundance of joy you continue to provide. Thank you lord for filling my spirit, every season during every harvest, and showing me that obeying you is our purpose. Amen

“Anything worth having don’t come easy and anything that comes easy is usually not worth having” -Zig Ziglar

This quote from Zig Ziglar really sums up the challenge of this bible verse, both figuratively and literally. Faith and the gifts that come along with the Holy Spirit require daily sacrifice and that isn’t easy; neither is reaping a harvest after months of waiting. Imagine, looking down on the most bountiful crop in the land, and you haven’t the help to process your yield. You are faced with two options, to either work your family to the bone in the fields all night and into the morning or seek members of your community for help. Amazingly, everyone benefits from the harvest, even the gleaners.

Working the harvest strengthens community, builds abundance amongst neighbors, and is an act of selflessness. Similarly, in God’s garden, there are endless fruits, but harvesting those fruits require work. It’s more than just going to church on Sundays and praying for worldly things. Harvesting God’s fruit requires:

Knowing when someone around you needs to be loved or shown joy. Remembering that patience is a selfless act and when you are feeling the most impatient, find an extra minute to give to someone else. Bringing kindness in the midst of chaotic madness, restoring goodness and order. Bringing faith to the faithless and showing gentleness to the rough. Lastly, the self-control to remain selfless in the harvesting of the Lord’s fruits.

Whether you are harvesting wheat or God’s bounty, you must have community. Throughout our daily lives, opportunities present themselves to reap God’s fruit, the question is are you willing to put in the work?
